Joana Franco holds a degree in dance (2019) and a master's in choreographic creation (2023). Recently, she has focused on choreography as a field for studying bodies in motion, closer to or further from dance. Her work is characterised by a multidisciplinary practice centred on itself, where materials and devices function simultaneously as objects of interest and artistic support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her engagement with artistic research, along with the intersections of choreography, composition, logic, and programming, has shaped her most recent projects. Among these, Kaput!<\/a><\/em>stands out, in which she developed a prototype of the \u201centire choreography,\u201d exploring a synthetic conception of the body as a spatial entity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A sua pr\u00e1tica desenvolve-se no campo da coreografia expandida, centrando-se no cruzamento entre o gr\u00e1fico e o coreogr\u00e1fico. Neste contexto, destaca-se o projeto \u201cKaput!\u201d (2023\u20132024), um prot\u00f3tipo de toda a coreografia, apresentado no formato de confer\u00eancia-performance e em modo laborat\u00f3rio \u2018coreo-gr\u00e1fico\u2019 no Centro Cultural de Alfena, na Casa Cheia, na Galeria Z\u00e9 dos Bois e no Espa\u00e7o Cultural das Merc\u00eas. Paralelamente, tem trabalhado em design gr\u00e1fico e desenvolvimento web para projetos no setor cultural e art\u00edstico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ao longo do seu percurso colaborou com diversas institui\u00e7\u00f5es e artistas, entre os quais Lara Maia, Joaquim Leal, Francisco Miguel, Coletivo TETO, Culturgest, Est\u00fadios Victor C\u00f3rdon e Plano Nacional das Artes, para al\u00e9m de desenvolver trabalho de comunica\u00e7\u00e3o para projetos de Biloba, Duarte Ventura, Estela Alexandre, DIN\u00c2MIA’CET-Iscte e SocioDigital Lab for Public Policy.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Joana Franco completed a Bachelor\u2019s degree in Dance (Escola Superior de Dan\u00e7a, 2019) and a Master\u2019s degree in Choreographic Creation and Professional Practices, with the final project Kaput!<\/em> and the dissertation Kaput! \u2013 a prototype of the entire choreography<\/a><\/em> (ESD, 2023).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the field of dance and performance creation, she is noted for her collaboration with Lara Maia on projects such as corporeal encounters<\/a><\/em> (2019), xx<\/a><\/em> (2021) and Pose<\/a><\/em> (2022), as well as performative interactions with the exhibitions M\u00e3o-de-Obra<\/a><\/em> (Ant\u00f3nio Bolota at Culturgest, 2021) and Sculptured in Darkness<\/a><\/em> (Hugo Canoilas at Funda\u00e7\u00e3o Calouste Gulbenkian, 2022).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Driven by an interest in artistic research, she authored an article<\/a> on the work of the collective TETO, published in RIACT No. 5 (2022), and participated in the projects Choreographic Creation \u2013 Process, Documentation and Analysis<\/em> (Instituto Polit\u00e9cnico de Lisboa, 2022) and Ghost Dance: A methodology to analyse dance movement in interaction with virtual reality<\/em> (CICANT \u2013<\/em> Universidade Lus\u00f3fona, INET-md, 2024).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the intersection of choreography, design, and digital technologies, she developed Kaput! (choreo-graphic lab)<\/a><\/em> (2024), an exhibition of interactive choreographic objects; Pocket Choreographies \u2014 dance it yourself<\/a><\/em> (2001), a tool for the random generation of choreographies; and dance in limbo: the hybrid body<\/a><\/em> (2020), a VR experience for dance improvisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She collaborated with Culturgest in the design of participatory projects such as Bal Moderne<\/a><\/em> (2023), What Is the Future of the Cultural Institution?<\/em> (2023) and Tempestade Mental<\/em> (2024). Her involvement in this area began as a participant in the projects ENTRAR (Culturgest, 2020-2021) and Mutantes<\/a> (BoCA \u2013 Bienal de Artes Contempor\u00e2neas, 2022). Em 2025, foi acolhida como Artista Residente<\/a> no Agrupamento de Escolas Fernando Namora, em parceria com o Plano Nacional das Artes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, she works in communication design and web development for the cultural sector. She is the author of album covers for musical projects by Ant\u00f3nio Carvalho<\/a>, Biloba<\/a>, Duarte Ventura<\/a> and Estela Alexandre<\/a>. She frequently collaborates with research units at ISCTE \u2013 University Institute of Lisbon on communication materials for projects and events.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
